The number 108 is considered a sacred number in Buddhism, Hinduism, and yogic tradition.

MALA or Japa beads come in a string of 108 and are used for breathing devotional meditation, mantra and prayer. With each bead a mantra or prayer is repeated to meet a total of 108.

The Meru bead is the larger bead or tassel on the mala and is not part of the 108. This is the guiding bead and marks the beginning and end of the mala/chant/mantra/prayer.

108 Mala beads are used for controlled breathing and meditation/mindfulness techniques and are helpful with many mental health diagnosis’.

My approach to mental health is largely based on loosening concern with an identity, inviting a shift away from a rigidity of view of societies perceptions, reaching for deeper connection with yourself and others and with the environment and living things that surround us (animals, plants, stones) or air, earth, fire and water.

A person who is mentally healthy is not self-preoccupied, but is interested in the people and things around them. My approach offers a a natural and psychological perspective based on the concept of non-self; an other-centred perspective that emerges as a person becomes less caught up in maintaining their sense of identity and the unrealistic world view that supports it.

I am grounded in the importance of looking for the reality of things. In terms of practice this can be linked to the centrality of meditation and mindfulness and taking out time for yourself in the present moment actively not passively.

Some problematic areas of behaviour that arise from mental health and illness’ such as, self- esteem and self-harm and so on would be viewed by myself simple sad occurrences, which in one way or another causes ongoing dis-ease and stress.

A theory I have that is dependent on karmic origination and I discourage a person from making expressions of dis-ease in order to help avoid feeding negativity in mentality and feed negative energies into other beings.

What I hope to contribute is a richness of direct observation of mental health and Illness and the Healing and Recovery it takes. As well as the unethical underpinning which concurs in views of society.

Most importantly, though, the mentality is grounded in a view of compassion and wisdom towards yourself. It is the corner stones of human improvement.
